Corfe Castle

The Corfe Castle OPC page is part of the Dorset Online Parish Clerk Project which began in 2002. The web page contains historical data, transcriptions, Will extracts etc.

Corfe is famous for its ruined castle which was built in the 11th century. During the Civil War, the castle was held siege by Parliamentary forces who were kept at bay for many months by Lady Bankes & the royalist occupants. The castle was finally taken in 1643. The Parliamentary army then spent many months reducing it to rubble with gunpowder. Until 1877, Corfe Castle included the chapelry of Kingston which has its own one-place study *.
