The Historical Topographic Map Explorer from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) provides easy access to more than 178,000 US maps dating back to 1884.

The map will then show a red marker on your chosen location and a timeline of maps (and scales) available will appear.

Click on the required coloured box e.g. Homer 1944 (1:62,500)

First, type in the place you wish to look at, for example, Homer, New York.

When the required location appears in the listing, click on it.

The present day map will then appear.

Move your mouse over the map to the place you wish to see historic maps for and then click.
