Trade directories are a vital source for the study of local and family history.
In Britain the first recognisable directories emerged during the late seventeenth century, meeting a growing demand for accurate information about trade and industry.
The content of the directories varies, but typically they contain:
Trade Directories -
Through the National Library of Scotland you can now access 694 directories for the period 1773 to 1911, covering 28 towns and counties in Scotland.
Many of the directories are Post Office Directories but there are other directories included such as Clarke’s and Cook & Wylie’s.
