Peter Higginbotham’s Workhouses site provides a great deal of information about workhouses throughout the UK & Ireland and what daily life was like in the workhouse.

Early workhouses were usually administered by single parishes, but groups or unions of parishes later took on this role, with the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act creating a system of Poor Law Unions across the whole of England and Wales.
