{"id":119,"date":"1893-05-19T12:00:12","date_gmt":"1893-05-19T12:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oneplacestudy.org\/beddgelert\/?p=119"},"modified":"2016-11-06T22:37:28","modified_gmt":"2016-11-06T22:37:28","slug":"1893-nant-gwynant-treat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oneplacestudy.org\/beddgelert\/archives\/119","title":{"rendered":"1893: Nant Gwynant Treat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Friday afternoon, the inhabitants of this vale assembled at the <strong>Board School<\/strong> to enjoy a treat given them by <strong>Sir Edward and Lady <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Watkin<\/span><\/strong>, of the Chalet.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Edward Watkin, M.P., and Lady Watkin attended, and there were also present <strong>Mrs Edgar Watkin<\/strong>, <strong>Mrs Wyatt<\/strong> and <strong>Misses Wyatt<\/strong>, of Bryn Gwynant: <strong>Rev Daniel Vaudrey<\/strong>, Plas Gwynant. and <strong>Rev J. C. Martin<\/strong>. The tables, which had been tastefully laid out, were presided over by <strong>Mrs Hill<\/strong>, <strong>Miss Miller<\/strong>, <strong>Miss Gibsons<\/strong>, <strong>Miss Walker<\/strong>,<strong> Miss Fenton<\/strong>, <strong>Mr Sutton<\/strong>, of the Chalet; <strong>Miss Davies<\/strong>, Castell; <strong>Miss Roberts<\/strong>, Bron Graig; <strong>Misses Jones<\/strong>, Post-office; <strong>Miss Williams<\/strong>, Glanaber;<strong> Miss Roberts<\/strong>, Bryntirion; <strong>Mrs E. Williams<\/strong>, and <strong>Mrs M. Griffiths<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At 3.30 p m., about 50 of the<strong> Sunday School children<\/strong> sat down to tea, and ample justice was done to the many good things laid before them. After tea, a short miscellaneous meeting was held. Some English and Welsh songs were sung by the children. Songs were also given by<strong> Mr Owen Williams<\/strong> and his party.<\/p>\n<p>The Rev D. Vaudrey delivered a short address to the children. The <strong>Rev G. Owen<\/strong> proposed, and <strong>Mr W. Roberts<\/strong>, Bron Graig, seconded a vote of thanks to Sir Edward and Lady Watkin for their kindness in providing the excellent treat. All present expressed their thanks and good wishes by giving loud and hearty cheers.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Edward, in responding, referred to his Welsh descent, and humorously claimed for himself the title of the heir of Wynnstay. He referred to the many positions of esteem and honour occupied by Welshmen and to their ability in quitting themselves like men in their different positions. He had always found Welshmen as workmen giving a fair day\u2019s work for a fair day&#8217;s wages.<\/p>\n<p>During the entertainment, Lady Watkin presented the eldest member of the Sunday School &#8211; an old woman of 81 years &#8211; with a fine shawl. On dismissal, each child was presented with a bag full of biscuits and a threepenny piece. After the tables had been arranged, the elder inhabitants sat down to tea, which was much enjoyed. A singing and competive meeting brought this memorable day to a close. The arrangements were under the control of the Rev G.
