see further information below<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Richard James Cragghill (1871-1949) <\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>born at Tebay on 23 March 1871<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>baptised at Kendal on 10 September 1871<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lived at <strong>19 Helmside, Oxenholme<\/strong> in 1891<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assistant schoolmaster in 1891<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>married <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Mary Amelia Porter (1872-1950)<\/span><\/strong> in 1896<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>became a schoolmaster at Cartmell Fell in 1901<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lived at Shanty Cottage, Cartmel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>James Cragghill&#8217;s &#8230;&#8221;wife taught the girls needlework and cookery. Fortunately for posterity, Mr Cragghill was a keen photographer in collaboration with the curate, Thomas Price. They recorded everyday life and death on the fell, including portraits of dead infants. There was even trick photography, where the same people appeared on both sides of the picnic spread. By the beginning of the First World War, the school was bursting at the seams and a new classroom was added for the infants and a second teacher appointed. Also of Alice Cragghill who died July 13th 1954 aged 68 years.
