The Oxenholme Filling Station lies on the southbound carriageway of the Burton Road.

Kelly’s Directory 1938 showed Alban Richard Mason as proprietor of Oxenholme Garage. Alban was just 23 but sadly died later that year.

Kellys Directory 1938

Hector Joseph Wood (1903-1981) ran the garage in 1965 along with a taxi business. The pumps were branded Fina and Super Fina.

The following information was contributed by local schoolchildren from St. Marks, Natland to the BBC Domesday Project in 1986:

“The filling station was built in 1910 and is currently owned by Mrs. Pat Dixon who bought it fifteen months ago. Part of the building is used as living accommodation. There are two staff selling Petrofina petrol which is delivered from Preston. The opening times are from 08.00 to 19.00 through the week, 09.00 to 18.00 on Saturdays and 09.00 to 17.00 on Sundays. The station is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The quietest day is Tuesday, the busiest is Thursday. Holiday traffic also provides a lot of custom. After fuel, cigarettes and oil are most in demand. There are a number of regular customers, mainly from Oxenholme. The current owners have not altered the station, neither have any fires or accidents occurred during their time.

Reading Room

The former Reading Room on the Burton Road, now a private residence, was provided by the Railway Company for use by the Railway Men’s Institute and a copy of the Lancashire Evening Post could be read there. The building was constructed around the same time as Helmside Cottages were built (1885).

Membership was open to all aged over 14 for 1/- and billiards and dominoes were provided. Originally there was a Bible class, but things religious were taken over by the Mission Hall in 1912. There was a children’s class, Mothers’ Union with baking, crochet etc. The pensioners’ club lasted until c 1985. It was also a polling station.

John Bateson

At one point monies were raised in Natland and Oxenholme to convert the Reading Room to a Village Hall for both villages but the stables at St Mark’s Vicarage in Natland were chosen instead for the new Village Hall.

The Reading Room finally closed in the mid 1980s and became a residential property.

Mission Hall

The Railway Children’s Choir helped raise the £850 necessary to build the Mission Hall in 1906 on the Burton Road immediately opposite Helmside Cottages. Services were held there on Sunday afternoons and evenings.

The Natland and Oxenholme Women’s Institute was inaugurated there in 1921.

The Mission Hall closed in 1951 and is now home to T.J.S. Northern Ltd civil engineers and construction equipment hire.

Man accused of robbing a South Cumbria filling station shop to stand trial

by Amy Fenton

A MAN accused of robbing a South Cumbria filling station shop is to stand trial later this year.

Colin Eaves, 33, faces two charges which arise out of a late night incident at the Burton Road business premises in Oxenholme.

This is said to have occurred at around 10:30pm on November 22, sparking a police investigation and a public appeal for information. Eaves appeared at Carlisle Crown Court on Monday over a video link for a short hearing in front of Judge Nicholas Barker.

Eaves pleaded not guilty to the alleged robbery of a male shop employee, and also the possession of an offensive weapon – a meat cleaver – in public “without good reason or lawful authority”.

Cash, tobacco products and alcohol are said to have been stolen during the raid, and staff members threatened.

A Cumbria police spokesman said in the aftermath: “No one was injured during the incident.”

Eaves, who is said to be from Kendal but of no fixed address, is now due to stand trial in front of a jury at the crtown court. The hearing is due to start in the week of March 30 and, it is estimated, will last around four days,

In the meantime, Eaves was remanded in custody by Judge Barker.
