1938: Run Down by a Light Engine – Kendal Man Loses Foot and Hand

From our own Correspondent, Kendal, Thursday

Hearing cries from the railway line near Oxenholme signal box, to-day, the signalman, W. Swarbrick, found Richard Hill (60), railway messenger, of Fellside, Kendal, lying near the line with his left foot and left hand badly crushed.

It appears that Hill had been run down by a light engine, although the driver was unaware of an accident.

Hill was rushed to the County Hospital at Kendal, where his foot and hand were amputated. To-night he was stated to be very poorly.
