Natland Terrace

Main menu

Natland Terrace was built in 1896 to house railway workers. It actually comprises two rows of terraces – one row each side of Hill Place built the following year. Both terraces were incorporated into the numbering of the newly-named Helmside Road in 1972.

Opposite the two terraces were allotments for the residents. The allotments backed on to the railway line with a ‘fence’ made of vertical sleepers.

1909: Serious Accident at Oxenholme Station

A serious accident occurred at Oxenholme station on Wednesday morning to John Park, a shunter, who had been in the employ of the London and North-Western Railway Company for a good many years. Contrary to the rules, it appears that he attempted to board an engine which was being driven to the shed by Fred Oates, of Ann Street, Kendal, and, as a result of his foot slipping as he was climbing up on to the footplate, he fell backwards into the four-foot way, and his left foot became tightly wedged in the points, the wheels of the tender passing over it and almost severing it at the ankle. Skilful and efficient first-aid was promptly rendered by Mr. William Haythornthwaite, and Messrs. R. Knights (stationmaster), Swinglehurst, Collin, Grace, Shepherd, and other employees of the company who were on the spot at the time, did all they could for the unfortunate man until he could be conveyed by special train to Kendal, and from there to the County Hospital. Later in the day the limb was amputated below the knee, and on Thursday the patient was reported to be doing nicely. Park, who is a married man with a large family, lives at Longpool, Kendal.
